WASHINGTON—“The Obama administration and the European Union should be pressing Mr. Erdogan to respect the rule of law and give police and prosecutors the opportunity to present their cases in court,” says the Washington Post’s editorial board in an instructive editorial published Wednesday, calling on President Obama to reconsider its foreign policy with Turkey.
The editorial article urges the Obama administration to finally act on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spiraling authoritarianism.
The authors highlight the many transgressions by Erdogan and his administration over the years and lament the fact that the Obama administration has not applied pressure despite the deterioration of Turkish democracy.
The editors point to a growing rift between a Turkey that Obama once described as “a political model for the Middle East,” and a Turkey that seems to resemble its authoritarian neighbors more and more each day. Not a mistaken observation when considering that Turkey is number one again this year in the number of jailed journalists, not just in the Middle East but in the world, topping even Iran and China.
A final and troubling trend runs parallel to the latest graft scandal that has hit the Erdogan administration: a slanderous campaign carried out by the pro-government media is in full swing in Turkey, accusing the United States and Israel as dark powers who are behind the turmoil that has gripped Turkey. This daft and deliberate anti-West discourse, the authors say, cannot be ignored and must be given an appropriate response by the United States.
With an ever-growing slew of offenses by the Erdogan administration piling up, the Washington Post says there is a new urgency for the Obama administration to reconsider its policy toward Turkey and Erdogan.

Obama, like other US presidents and most foreign leaders, is afraid of Turkey.
When Turks say boo, others jump.
Obama is so pathetically afraid of Erdogan that he won’t even allow the Armenian Orphan Rug to be displayed at the Smithsonian. Obama is afraid that Erdogan would get throw a temper tantrum and spank him. Obama kisses Erdogan’s feet.
Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Ambassador Samantha Powerless (both of whom are turncoats on the Armenian genocide issue, something we don’t hear much about) are similarly afraid of Turkey.
These are the cowards that are our so-called leaders.
Dear Vahe,
I am pretty sure that neither Obama nor all the other “turncoats” are ‘afraid’ of Turkey, they simply regard the Armenians simply as not important. The view in Washington is 1-not important, 2- (and more worrisome) is that Armenia…therefore Armenians…are in the “other” camp. Customs Union with Russia seals this fate. It is therefore very important that Armenians in the US press even harder to literally embarrass the US leadership in acting on a more moral basis and counteract against the “Russian factor” as much as possible, that is the only thing left for us.
There are also alleged links between Erdogan’s son and Al-Qaeda. Plus, there’s evidence that the country supports Syrian terrorists.
Who, Obama? this spineless and unprincipled joke of a “leader”?? give me a break. One cannot expect a fake person, like obama, to act on principles.
scratch this idiot out as a big @$%!-ing disappointment.
As you and you ilk continue doing Washington’s bidding in Armenia, expect to be disappointed over-and-over again by your favorite “democracy”.
Well of course Obama will blindly support the AKP party. Because it has ideaological similarities to the Muslim Brotherhood, which Obama also supports as well. I think what needs to happen is the international community should pressure Turkish courts to close down the AKP for good and stop being “politically correct.”
Washington Post chief editor must know, as long as the colorful turkey’s tap dancing, stripteasing and spreading her beautiful feathers professionally, on top of Obama’s dinning room table, then turkey businesses will be as same as before, especially, for White House admires!!
Yawnnnnnnn……..why do we have to follow and report on anything related to Turkey? This has nothing to do with Armenian, Armenians or the Hye Tad. We’re so po;politically immature……it’s better we stick to something we know, like making Khatchkars.
I can’t define democracy in the turkish land …
since when it was a democratic terrain …
Civilized states define it that way …forcefully to change…
I don’t know how …If and If…
15 million Kurds have no school where they can learn their own language…
15 million Alawis…can’t say we are Alawis…
2 million Armenians and more can’t open their mouths to say we are Armenians
Turkified by force …They are classified as number 2 in their hidden statistics.
Till today they did not find who killed our honest person Hrant Dink
Ask only the Armenians to tell you …who are the Turkish government…
since they arrived by their scimitars in a civilized Armenian Highlands…
and rules transferring the ground to genocided place…
Full of smashed skulls …and abolishing churches, cathedrals…monasteries…
Then any one can define if this land can be a democratic place …even the genes are not democratic…how it can change to be democratic …suddenly through one day …
It will never and never
Democracy is a gene must be born with each creature …
can you change any tiger to behave like an innocent sheep…!!!
