FRESNO–State Assemblyman Chuck Poochigian (R-Fresno) announced on Jan. 19 his intentions to seek election to the 14th Senate District. The 14th Senate District is currently represented by Senator Ken Maddy (R-Fresno) who will be retiring from the office at the end of the Legislature’s 1998 session.
Poochigian was first elected to represent the 29th Assembly District in the California Assembly in 1994–succeeding now-Secretary of State Bill Jones. He was appointed to key leadership positions in his first term–including holding the office of chairman of the Appropriations Committee and serving on the eight-member Budget Conference Committee. He previously served as a senior advisor to Governors Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian. Poochigian practiced business and civil law in Fresno until 1988.
Poochigian stated–"I have thoroughly enjoyed my work in the State Assembly and am especially appreciative of the leadership positions I have held. I am now excited about the possibility of serving a larger constituency in the central and southern San Joaquin Valley. As with all legislative districts–the 14th Senate District is comprised of diverse people and interests. The district is distinguished by a rich heritage rooted in its agriculturally-based economy. We have a unique set of issues–and constituents with an independent spirit who want common sense approaches to problem-solving.
"From issues involving improvement of our educational system to reforming our justice system–from serving as an advocate for private sector solutions and pro-agriculture policies to making people accountable for their actions–from standing up for private property rights to showing due regard for the worth of individuals and families."
Poochigian continued–"During my two terms in the Legislature–I have tried to fulfill pledges and be true to my expressed philosophy as well as to work very hard and be responsive. It’s my hope that the voters of the 14th Senate District will view my performance favorably."
The 14th Senate District consists of parts of eastern Tulare–Kern and Fresno Counties.
