STEPANAKERT (RFE/RL)–A regular field monitoring by representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe found no major violations of the cease-fire regime in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The monitoring was conducted last week from both sides of a section of the dividing line separating Armenian and Azeri forces. An RFE/RL correspondent in Stepanakert reports that OSCE observers arrived at the site after receiving security guarantees from the warring sides.
Nagorno-Karabakh officials said the assurances were requested following recent sporadic gunfire from positions held by the Azeri forces.
Apart from occasional exchange of fire from light weapons–the Russian-mediated truce signed by Armenia–Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh in May 1994 has since largely held. However–negotiations sponsored by the OSCE have so far failed to bring about any serious progress towards the conflict’s settlement.
The OSCE observer mission is headed by Ambassador-at-large Andrzei Kasprzyk–a Polish diplomat and official representative of the OSCE’s acting chairman.
