YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The main topic of a round table discussion organized by the Armenian Assembly of America’s center for non-governmental organizations was the growing prostitution rate in Armenia which is believed to be caused by the prevalent difficult social conditions facing the population.
Prostitution in Armenia can be divided into three groups: street prostitution–elite prostitution and exported prostitution. The cheapest street prostitutes have their own spots in central streets and "earn" from $10 to $50 in a couple of hours. The elite prostitutes have cars–cellular phones and mainly gather at expensive cafes. Their per hour income may reach to $100. The last group of prostitutes "work" abroad. The outflow of Armenian prostitutes to Turkey–United Arab Emirates–Germany and CIS counties is also growing.
Some participants in the discussion said that to prevent growing prostitution sexual education should be taught in school. According to interior ministry statistics–they have registered 1,400 prostitutes–but local experts say the actual number is much greater.
