YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian monastery of St. Thaddeus in Iran is being reconstructed–the public relations department of Iran’s embassy in Yerevan told Armenpress quoting the Iranian IRNA news agency.
The historical monument is situated 15 km off Chaldran field in the vicinity of the village of Kelisa Kand.
According to the reconstruction project–the cells in the monastery’s courtyard will be reinforced and entirely rebuilt–with special reinforcemen’s made for the winter months..
The monastery was built in the 7th century on the tomb of Saint Thaddeus–but was destroyed by a 14th century earthquake. It was reconstructed in 1319 during the rule of Abbas Mirza. Later another building was added to it. The monastery is a famous pilgrimage site for thousands of Iranian and Diaspora Armenia’s.
