YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s under 21 national soccer team defeated their counterparts from Turkey 2-1 in Yerevan on Wednesday, denying Turkey a move to the top of the Second Selection Group in the 17th Under-21 European Championship.
Turkey needed three points to leapfrog the Czech Republic and take pole position in the race for the Championship play-offs.
Armenia now has 10 points, the Czech have 14 and Turkey 13 points.
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and the President of the Armenian Soccer Federation, Ruben Hayrapetian, met with the players after the match to congratulate them on the victory.
Speaking at a press conference after the game, the Turkish head coach, Mutif Erkasap, said they were given an “excellent”’ welcome in Armenia. He said his players had expected the game to be too tough and tense.
