GLENDALE—Armenian-American candidates Rafi Manoukian, Nayiri Nahabedian and Vahe Peroomian received the highest votes in Tuesday’s Glendale municipal elections, with Peroomian garnering the most votes of the the day–11,335–in his re-election bid for the Glendale Community College board.
The City Council race is still too close to call, with incumbents John Drayman and Dave Weaver closely trailing behind Manoukian, who garnered 8,968 votes.
The Glendale News Press, citing the city clerk’s office, is reporting that there was a gap of 135 votes between Manoukian and Drayman with an estimated 3,000 ballots still to be counted, including provisional and mail-in ballots that were turned in at the polls. It could be weeks before the vote is finalized and verified.
Along with Manoukian’s 8,968 votes, Weaver received 8,833 votes to Drayman’s 8,806 votes. Another candidate, Chahe Keuroghelian, whom the Glendale News Press dubbed as a “perennial candidate” for his relentless and failed attempts at running for City Council, received 6,598.
On the Glendale Unified School District front, incumbents Nahabedian and Mary Boger received the highest votes with 9,323 and 7,875 respectively. Vahik Satoorian received 6496 votes.
The election’s top vote-getter was Glendale Community College Board incumbent Vahe Peroomian who received 11,335 votes for an easy victory. He is joined by another incumbent Tony Tartaglia who secured his reelection with 10,968 votes.
In other election news, Measure S, which ensures that the school district will have a guaranteed source of income in the wake of the state’s budget woes, was approved by a landslide with 11,989 voters overwhelmingly supporting the bond measure. The Armenian National Committee Glendale-Political Action Committee endorsed the measure and worked closely with proponents to ensure its success.
