BAKU (Armenpress)–The 78-year old Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev will seek re-election in the 2003 autumn presidential elections. Aliyev announced about his decision to stand for another term in office April 23 during a meeting with local media at the Baku Bina airport before leaving for Turkmen’stan–where he will meet with leaders of four other Caspian littoral states to discuss the Caspian status.
Aliyev said his 40-year old son Ilham–the deputy chairman of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party–seen by many as a possible contender for the post–will not be running for presidency–as only candidate can be nominated by the party.
