EAST LOS ANGELES–On Friday, December 18th, representatives from the Armenian National Committee San Gabriel Valley Chapter met with Congresswoman Judy Chu representing the 32nd Congressional District to discuss co-sponsorship of House Resolution 252.
ANC San Gabriel Valley Chairman Ara Malazian met with Congresswoman Chu to request that the Congresswoman continue with the advocacy of Genocide recognition that her predecessor, Congresswoman Hilda Solis had set during her tenure in Congress. Congresswoman Solis was selected by President Barak Obama to serve as Secretary of Labor in the new administration.
Congresswoman Chu responded positively to the request and indicated that she would have her staff review the language in the resolution immediately. The Congresswoman could not foresee any reason that she would not co-sponsor the resolution and expressed her support for Genocide recognition while serving in the California State Legislature.
Ara Malazian explained that while serving the 32nd District, Secretary Solis was an active member of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues and a leader in efforts to secure full and appropriate U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide and that the ANC was looking forward to developing a positive relationship with Congresswoman Chu in the future.
The meeting ended with ANC representatives providing copies of the text of the resolution to members of the Congresswoman’s staff who would begin reviewing the language prior to year end and begin working toward a firm position as soon as possible after the first of the year.
