YEREVAN (Reuter) — Armenia Friday strongly denied Azeri accusations that one of its agents planted a subway bomb in the Azeri capital Baku in 1994 which killed 14 people.
The Azeri Interior Ministry said on Thursday that an agent trained by Armenian special services planted the device–which also injured 50.
"This accusation is not true," said Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arsen Gasparian. "This sort of statement just benefits [Azeri President Gaidar] Aliyev."
The Azeri Interior Ministry said the bomber was of mixed Azeri and Lezgin ancestry.
Lezgins live mostly in border areas between Azerbaijan and Russia and some want to carve out an independent state. Baku has often accused Yerevan of supporting radical Lezgins against the Azeri authorities to further its own territorial agenda.
