YEREVAN (ArmRadio)—The government of Austria on Saturday announced that it will allocate 600,000 euros as aid for Syrian Armenian refugees who have fled from the violence at home to Armenia, KUNA agency reports.
“The repercussions of the Syrian crisis have reached as far as Armenia, where some 9,000 Syrians have taken up refuge,” Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said in a statement. Half of the Syrian refugees in Austria are children suffering from malnutrition, he added.
The Armenian government has asked Austria to help it secure housing, in addition to other forms of aid, for the Syrian Armenian families that have fled their country, Spindelegger added.
Austria has so far aided Syrian refugees with a total of 7.4 million euros.
The number of Armenians in Syria was estimated to be 100,000 at the start of the crisis.
