YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The 55th regular session of the Human Rights Commission opened in Geneva on March 22 and will end on April 30. The commission consists of 53 representatives of UN member countries.
Armenia and Azerbaijan attend annual sessions with an observer status.
During the regular session–Azerbaijan’s delegate spoke about the session agenda "Right of Nations to Self-Determination." In his speech–he contended that some states were pointing to this right as an excuse for their own expansion. He asserted that the principle of self-determination stipulated by UN documen’s did not give any occasion not to accept the sovereignty–territorial integrity and political independence of a state.
The Azeri delegate’s speech was followed by that of Armenia’s representative–who advanced some opposing argumen’s.
In the end–Azerbaijan’s delegate delivered that Karabakh would never gain independence and would never join Armenia. Such an explicit tone in his statement aroused confusion among both commission members and observers.
