YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A national committee "700th Anniversary of the Ottoman Empire–the Biggest Catastrophe in the History of Civilization" is currently being formed in Armenia–the Union of Social Forces in Armenia announced Wednesday. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashanktsutiun–the Fund for High Technologies–Intellectual Armenia–Dignity and other public organizations–as well as a large group of scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia are actively involved in the establishment of the committee. The Democratic Party of Armenia and the Ramkavar Party may also join the committee.
It was highlighted during the session of the USFA that the newly-established committee would aim to present the negative impact of the Ottoman Empire on the history of civilization.
The session agreed to initiate an international project in collaboration with political parties and public organizations of countries which suffered under Ottoman rule.
Late last year an international campaign was mounted against UNESCO efforts to mark the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire. UNESCO voted to highlight the empire’s so-called cultural contributions.
