YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Democratic Party of Armenia recognizes as the cause for "today’s misfortunes" the "vicious" policies pursued by the Ter-Petrosyan administration. The DPA issued a statement highlighting "the collapse of industry and agriculture–the high unemployment rate–the distorted national values and the undermined national image."
The DPA views the early 1998 rise in prices of bread–water–electricity–notary service–as well as the exit flight tax as another evidence of the viciousness of the current authorities. The statement quotes UN experts as estimating 90 percent of the national wealth to belong to only four percent of Armenia’s population.
The DPA argues that the solution to the current crisis can only be achieved by using the party’s proposed democratic socialist economic model.
The DPA statement also warns authorities that they cannot continue to exploit the people of Armenia and calls on all working class citizens to rise in defense of their rights.
