LOS ANGELES—Love is a Warm Blanket handed out near 200 blankets to the homeless this winter. “Hearing the gratitude and seeing the smiles of these vulnerable people gives me so such joy. I do this purely out of love,” said Angela Amirkhanian, founder of Love is a Warm Blanket, an annual blanket drive to aid the homeless, by collecting and distributing donations of new and used blankets.
The drive begins in October to February, and aims to warm the hearts and souls of the less fortunate during the holidays. Those that do not get to spend this time with family, food and warm homes she said. Founded in 2012, what started with only a few blankets from friends and family, has gained the attention of hundreds through social media outlets, local publications and word of mouth.
Angela hosted two distribution events in Downtown, Los Angeles. The most recent event in February marked the end of the third and greatly successful drive. Thank you’s and smiles filled the streets of Skid Row, as residents chose blankets of choice. She also collaborated with and donated to residents of homeless shelters such as Union Rescue Mission, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission and My Friend’s Place.
The fourth annual drive will begin in October of 2015. Visit Love is a Warm Blanket on Facebook or follow on Twitter @Blanket_Drive for more information.
