The presidents of France and Turkey, Emmanuel Macron and Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Thursday on the margins of the NATO Summit, and among other issues, touched on the ongoing peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Macron stressed the need for the early signing of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, according to a statement posted to the the French president’s website.
Macron, in particular, reaffirmed his support for the ongoing dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan with the aim of concluding a peace treaty as soon as possible. He noted that this could open a new page in the region.
The French President also confirmed his country’s readiness to develop a positive bilateral agenda with Turkey.
Erdogan later told reporters that a peace treaty would be favorable for the region, adding that the decision to finalize a peace deal should be made by Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev, according to the Anadolu news agency.
“We want it to be signed and there will be peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In our meetings with the Prime Minister of Armenia, we see that positive steps have been taken here as well,” Erdogan said, emphasizing Aliyev has spoken in favor of a peace deal during meetings.
