YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The situation in Armenia is irreversible. There can be no return to the past–in any case the status quo will not remain–the situation must change," said Ashot Manoucharian–political secretary of the Union of Socialist Forces of Armenia.
According to him–the recently formed system of consumption and robbery which was never accepted by the overwhelming majority of the population is doomed. The latest events–in particular the recent terrorist acts–are a manifestation of the breakdown of the current system.
Manoucharian noted that the present distorted system of values has a foreign politics aspect as well–the order which the US is trying to dictate in the region. According to Manoucharian–the latest events testify to the defeat of that policy–and if it is not revised in the near future–would lead to its demise.
Manoucharian believes that the Karabakh issue has only aggravated the situation in Armenia. "Today–the Karabakh problem is the following: either we concentrate all our strength and stand up for the solution most acceptable for us–or the problem is solved under the dictation of certain forces–as a result of which some groups will get new sums from the west and get richer," Manoucharian said.
Regarding Armenian authorities–Manoucharian stressed the existence of deep differences on principal issues. According to him–those in power who are holding a relatively patriotic position have strict deman’s from those who are driven by consumption and robbery. "The potential of a peaceful development of events within the ruling structures is exhausted," Manoucharian concluded.
