On September 21, 1991, the Republic of Armenia gained its independence. This was an independence based on principles proclaiming a continuation of the mandate and heritage set forth by the First Republic of Armenia, founded on May 28, 1918.
Not only were the coat of arms, flag, and anthem of the First Republic adopted by the newly independent state, even the deputy who read the Declaration of Independence (August 23, 1991) was an ANM member named Aram Manukyan—specifically chosen for the task as a symbolic salute to the heroic founder and first Minister of Interior of the First Republic, Aram Manukian.
However, in the nineteen years since the reestablishment of independence, there has been a sad divergence from many of the core foundations which set the First Republic of Armenia apart as a proud moment in Armenian history. Successive regimes have fallen short of the commitment to democracy, freedom, unity, national security, social justice, and progressive policy instilled during the First Republic years and enshrined in Armenia’s modern Declaration of Independence.
There is a great deal to be learned from the experiences of the First Republic if the Armenian nation is serious about improving governance in the Republic of Armenia today.
On Sunday, September 26, the Armenian Youth Federation will host a special community lecture on this very topic. Dr. Richard Hovannisian—a pioneer of Armenian Studies and the preeminent scholar on the First Republic—will delve into the history and legacy of the First Republic.
Putting the past into perspective, he will offer relevant lessons that can be drawn from that period for governance and society in Armenia today.
