AKHALKALAK (A-INFO)–Following Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze’s resignation on Sunday–his representative in the Samtskhe-Javakhk region Gela Kvaratskheli also resigned–despite the opposition’s failure to seize power in Akhalkalak due to heavy police presence.

Akhalkalak district administration chair Artiush Hambartsumian immediately called a meeting of area activists asking them to maintain order. Having spoken to Tedo Japaridze of the Georgian Security Council–Hambartsumian spoke of the security issues discussed.
No incidents of violence were reported in either Akhalkalak or Ninotsminda.
