The United States and the European Union were joined by other countries in commending Yerevan and Baku, which announced on Thursday that negotiations on a peace treaty had ended with both parties agreeing on the language of the document.
“The United States commends Armenia and Azerbaijan for concluding negotiations on a historic peace treaty,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a press statement Friday.
“This is an opportunity for both countries to turn the page on a decades old conflict in line with President Trump’s vision for a more peaceful world. Now is the time to commit to peace, sign and ratify the treaty, and usher in a new era of prosperity for the people of the South Caucasus,” Rubio added.
“The European Union welcomes the respective announcements made by Armenia and Azerbaijan on the finalization of their negotiations on the draft Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations,” said the EU’s foreign affairs representative Kaja Kallas in a press statement on Friday.
“We commend both sides for their persistent work over the past few years in this direction, both on the bilateral track and with the involvement of the international community. The EU welcomes Armenia paving the way for the finalization of the text,” the EU rep added.
“The announcements represent a decisive step towards lasting peace and security in the region. It is key to keep this momentum and ensure smooth completion of this process with the same forward-looking and compromise-oriented approach, from both sides,” she explained.
“The EU fully supports the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalisation process and stands ready to provide additional support and expertise, should the sides request it,” added the EU statement.
The president of the Council of Europe, Anotnio Costa, has his praise for the development in a post on social media.
“A decisive step towards the full normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the opening of the region. I now encourage you to move forward with a swift signature of the peace agreement. The EU stands ready to support all further steps toward lasting peace and security in the South Caucasus,” Costa said in a post on X.
The foreign ministries of France, Germany and Estonia were among the countries that also welcomed the announcement by Armenia and Azerbaijan.
