YEREVAN—A court in Yerevan approved the prosecutor’s motion to remand a pro-Azerbaijani lobbyist Kevin (Kemal) Oksuz into custody, Arevik Khachatryan, a spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office said on Monday.
Oksuz was arrested last week in Armenia on a warrant issued by the United States, where he is wanted for perjury and falsifying documents in relation to a Congressional Ethics Office investigation, which alleges that Oksuz was involved in arranging a conference in Baku attended by 10 members of Congress, their spouses and their staff. The conference was allegedly paid for by the state-run SOCAR oil company, which secretly paid Oksuz a reported $750,000.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül told TRT that a warrant has been issued for Oksuz’s arrest in Turkey for his reported ties to Abdullah Gulen, who is being accused by official Ankara of plotting the 2016 failed coup.
“We continue following this case. However, Interpol isn’t treating our requests positively. Nevertheless, we will continue submitting requests over this person and other members of the terror group [Gulenists],” said Gul.
