YEREVAN (YERKIR)–Representatives of ethnic minorities gathered in Tbilisi on Wednesday and released a joint statement on the attempts of certain politicians to not only revive–but also incite intolerance toward Georgia’a ethnic population. "Recent developmen’s in Tbilisi and regions recall attempts in the past that led to ethnic confrontation–intolerance–and chaos," reads the statement.
They also implied that the voters’ rights in the Kvemo-Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakhk regions–predominantly populated by ethnic minorities–were violated. They point out that based on preliminary results–voting resulted in a two fold decrease of non-Georgians elected to parliament.
The statement calls for maintaining order and stability in the country–and deman’s that the President Shevardnadze and the government "pay tremendous attention to constitutional rights and maintaining stability in the country."
